Now, for a fuller picture of the Herzog Lineage 2024 Chenin Blanc, let's start the tasting.

Wine Overview
Quick Facts
- Winery: This wine comes to us from Herzog Wine Cellars, a historic winery based in Oxnard, California, which has the distinction of being the USA's largest producer of premium kosher wines. This winery is in its ninth generation of winemaking and operates under the motto of "letting the grapes speak for themselves."
- Grape Varietals: This wine is produced from Chenin Blanc grapes.
- ABV: 13.5% alcohol by volume.
- Price: As of this review, this wine costs about $17 USD.
Region - Clarksburg AVA, California
Located in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, the Clarksburg AVA is defined by the cool, humid air and morning fog that comes off the San Francisco Bay, dubbed the 'Delta Breeze.' This combination of humid air and morning fog moderates the area's warm summer days. So significant is this moderation that diurnal temperature swings can range up to 40 degrees F, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while preserving their natural acidity.
The terroir consists primarily of flat "delta lands" and islands surrounded by rivers and sloughs. The soil is composed of fertile alluvial deposits, including silt, clay, and loam, combining to offer excellent nutrient density for vines and equally excellent water retention.
Clarksburg's prized varietal is chenin blanc, with the wines produced from this grape being known for their acidity and honeyed notes. In addition to chenin blanc, Petite Sirah thrives in the region's warm summer days. Chardonnay (which is actually produced in larger numbers than Chenin Blanc) and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown here with success.

Aromatic and Tasting Notes
On the Nose
Expressive is the word that comes to mind. Off the top of the glass, there are notes of citrus and lemon zest, with bright green apple notes, and just a hint of quince. Honeyed tropical fruit manifests deeper into the glass, creating an aromatic profile that's bright and festive, and that begs to be lingered over.
On the Palate
Fresh and lively, the wine presents as thoroughly balanced with a light-to-medium body carrying a crisp acidity. The bright fruit notes from the bouquet carry over quite nicely.
Finish
The finish is long and clean, leaving behind traces of citrus and green apple.

Wine Score
Given this wine's delightful bouquet, well-balanced mouthfeel, and crisp acidity, I'll say that this is a very good example of Clarksburg Chenin Blanc, and award it a very respectable 89.
Food Pairings
Classic White Wine Pairings
- Poultry: Grilled chicken, chicken salads, roasted chicken with light seasonings, with a leafy green salad as a side, are all delicious pairings. Yes, we're all familiar with the 'white wine and chicken' pairing, but it's a classic for a reason.
- White Meats: Grilled pork, lightly seasoned porkchops, and veal scaloppine would all be delicious pairings. You might also consider pork loin stuffed with garlic, herbs, and parmesan.
- Vegetarian Dishes: Fresh summer salads, marinated tofu, or veggie noodles.
Where Chenin Blanc Shines
- Spicy Cuisine: Thai and Vietnamese cuisine often overpower other white wines with their spiciness, but Chenin Blanc is unique in that it actually complements heat excellently, rather than being overpowered by it. Pad Thai and green curries are especially excellent pairings.
- Chinese and Cantonese Cuisine: Chenin Blanc pairs deliciously with sweet and sour dishes, as well as egg rolls, spring rolls, or dim sum.
Cheeses and Appetizers
- Soft Cheeses: Goat cheese is the go-to cheese for chenin blanc. Brie is also a great choice, especially for fancy preparations such as brie baked in puff pastry with jam.
- Salty Snacks: This wine's lively acidity makes it a great (if surprising) pairing for saltier appetizers such as Parmesan breadsticks or aged salty cheeses.

Who is this Wine For?
If you're looking for value in a bottle, while wanting to enjoy the Clarksburg AVA or Californian white wine in general, the Herzog Lineage Chenin Blanc 2024 is for you. Additionally, if you're in the market for affordably priced kosher wine, this bottle was tailor-made for you.
I'll also add that if you're someone who has never been a fan of heavily oaked chardonnay, or the sturdier white wines that are often served alongside main courses, and are instead looking for something refreshing with a crisp acidity, you'll absolutely love this wine.
