The Merriam Vineyards Rockpile 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon comes to us from Gloeckner-Turner Ranch, nestled within the Rockpile American viticultural area, and located some thirteen-hundred feet above Lake Sonoma. This area is reputed to be 'perfect' for the growing of sturdy red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, we're putting that claim to the test.

Region - Rockpile AVA, Sonoma, California
Rockpile is a small and rugged appellation, located in Sonoma County's remote northwestern corner, perched high above the manmade Lake Sonoma. Vineyards in this AVA sit at elevations ranging from 800 to 2100 feet, which places them above the fog line that blankets the area's lower-lying areas. As you might expect, this results in the vines experiencing intense sun exposure, which in turn works to concentrate the grapes' flavors, mineral qualities, and firm their tannins. However, this same sun exposure - and generally rugged terrain - means that only hardy vines tend to do well here. That means Zinfandel (the area's flagship grape), Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Syrah.

Aromatic and Tasting Notes
On the Nose
Black cherry is immediate off the top of the glass, being rich and bold from the get-go. Just behind these initial berry notes are hints of peppermint and currants. Deeper into the glass, the aromatics mature with notes of coffee grinds, a hint of gravel and minerality, and perhaps just a whiff of damp soil. Towards the bottom of the glass, the earthy notes give way to dried herbs, and the minerality becomes somewhat more intense. Very layered and complex, and very enjoyable.
On the Palate
On the palate, the wine is unabashedly full-bodied, though the first word to come to mind is velvety, with smooth tannins and a refreshing acidity. The red fruits and black cherries from the bouquet carry over quite nicely, with the pleasant addition of something peppery, with notes of plum. A delight from the first sip to the last.
Finish
The finish is pleasant, but quite dry, and very lasting, leaving herbal notes and hints of black cherry in the mouth.
Wine Score
I'll score this wine a venerable 96. I consider this to be an excellent representation of Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon.

Food Pairings
- Grilled Meat: This is the classic pairing for a Sonoma cabernet. Aim for a well-marbled rib eye, or a New York strip steak grilled with rosemary and thyme in herb butter, or a skirt steak grilled in garlic and butter. Lamb chops or a rack of lamb would also pair nicely, especially if crusted with garlic and thyme.
- Hearty Stews: A good beef stew or bourguignon would be delicious, as would a blackberry-braised beef or a beef daube.
- Charcuterie and Aged Cheese: A charcuterie board with firm, aged cheese such as Romano, blue cheese, Manchego, or aged cheddar would be delicious. You want cured meats like black pepper-crusted salami, prosciutto, or Jamón. Throw in some smoked almonds for bonus points.
