A Taste of Nostalgia
There's no denying a shift in the air once October approaches, when pumpkins come out, and the Spooktober calendar comes out. That was (still is) my absolute favorite bit. There are a handful of treasured films I grew up anticipating each year, and one of them was Hocus Pocus.
That film, for me, was pure magic. I loved the aesthetics, the costumes, and of course, the music. To this day, it remains one of my top-rated Halloween films.
I had the most fun recreating these Hocus Pocus-inspired brownies, and this year, I decided to share them with you. So, if you're looking for something fun to bake to get into the spirit of the season, these are for you.

Hocus Pocus Brownies Ingredient Checklist
- Brownie Mix - You can absolutely make your own homemade brownies, but we opted for a fudge brownie box mix for today's post just to simplify the process a little.
- Baker's Notes: Make boxed brownies your own by adding a splash of vanilla extract and a teaspoon of instant coffee. It adds some depth of flavor and really brings out the full richness of the cocoa.
- Candy Bars - Since it is Halloween after all, a few chopped candy bars offer the best surprise when you cut into them. I went with Snickers since I love the caramel and nuts added in, but M&M's, Milky Ways, Kit Kats, Crunch bars, and Reese's cups are all perfect substitutes.
- Baker's Notes: A swirl of caramel sauce or even marshmallows is also a decadent addition to brownies.
- Melted Chocolate - How much chocolate is too much? Can we agree there's no such thing, especially on the International Day of Candy and Chocolate? Good. I topped these off with melted chocolate, which will give us a nice base for our sprinkles.
- Black Gel Icing - You'll want to pick up a tube of either black gel icing or black writer's icing for detailing our little spellbooks. Both are available at your local craft store or grocery store. I liked that the gel icing was shimmery, which added dark whimsy to these.
- Candy Eyeballs - I'll say the candy eyeballs are the star of the show. You can order them online or pick them up at your local craft store as well.
- Decorative Sprinkles - This is optional, but I feel like the combination of dark sprinkles and gold made the brownies a little more magical. When it comes to decorating, I have a very 'more is more' approach.
