If you're looking for a delicious warm weather meal that's sure to satisfy, look no further than this Greek-style Chicken Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. This meal is perfect for a weeknight dinner, a cookout with friends, or a spring luncheon. The combination of juicy chicken, tangy feta, and flavorful spices make this a great choice for any spring table.

So, first things first, what makes these burgers 'Greek-Style?' Greek-style dishes often use fresh herbs and spices like oregano, garlic, and mint, as well as staples like olives, feta cheese, and lemon. In this recipe, the flavors of Greece are blended into chicken burgers, and then paired with sweet potato fries to create a meal that is as accessible and easy to love as it delicious.

The star of this dish is the chicken burger, which is made with lean ground chicken, herbs, and feta cheese. The chicken cooks up moist and tender, while the feta adds a tangy note that complements the other ingredients. The sweetness of the sweet potato fries adds a 'playful' note that adds the perfect balance to the savoriness of the burger. For a heartier meal, you can add on things like tzatziki or a yogurt-dill dressing, or even a side of onion rings.

Ready to get cooking? Let's dive into the details and make some Greek-style Chicken Burger.

Ingredient Checklist - The Burgers

  • Chicken Breast or Chicken Chop Meat. While I'm grinding my own, feel free to use pre-ground chicken for today's recipe. I do recommend chop meat that's on the leaner side when it comes to chicken.
  • Feta. The go-to cheese for today's recipe. Feta cheese adds a tangy and salty flavor to the chicken burgers, and it pairs nicely with the other ingredients. Feta is commonly used in Greek-style dishes, so it's a natural choice for this recipe. The feta also helps to keep the burgers moist and juicy, so you don't have to worry about them drying out during cooking.
  • Garlic. Charring or roasting the garlic before adding it to the burgers will bring out its natural sweetness, as well as its earthy and nutty flavor. Roasting garlic also helps to mellow its flavor, so it won't overpower the other ingredients. Additionally, it helps to reduce the strong 'bite' that raw garlic can have, which - while desirable in recipes like souvlaki - I simply don't think melds well with today's recipe.
  • Baby Spinach. Baby spinach is the smallest variety of flat leaf spinach. Baby spinach is a great choice for these burgers because it is more tender than regular spinach. This makes it easier to incorporate into the burgers, and it also ensures that it will cook quickly and evenly. Baby spinach also has a milder flavor, which helps to balance out the other flavors in the dish.
  • Sun Dried Tomatoes. These add a rich and savory flavor to the burgers. Do note that when it comes to sun dried tomatoes, a little goes a long way. Additionally, the tomatoes provide a pop of color to the burgers, which makes them look more appealing.
  • Red Onion. I'm using red onions as they strike a nice balance between the bite of yellow onions and the sweetness of sweet onions. They also add a nice pop of color.
  • Salt. Plain table salt is all you need for this recipe.
  • Olive Oil. As the flavor of the oil will come through, I'd suggest using a decent quality extra virgin olive oil.
  • Flour. Plain, all-purpose flour is what you're looking for here.
  • Cooking Oil. For frying the burgers, all you need is plain, flavor-neutral cooking oil, such as vegetable or corn oil.
  • Bread. I'm putting the burgers on regular hamburger rolls, but pitas, flatbreads, or even crusty Italian bread would all work great.

Building a Better Burger - Making This Burger Your Own

  • Swap the Chicken. While I'm using ground chicken, today's burgers would also work great with your choice of turkey, pork, or lamb.
  • Tzatziki Sauce. The quintessential Greek condiment that's used on everything from gyros to souvlaki to salad. As a nice bonus, Tzatziki couldn't be easier to make.
  • Greek Yogurt-Dill Dressing. This is a creamy and tangy sauce, that's simply delicious on things like sandwiches, salads, and grilled meats. It is made with Greek yogurt (full fat for best results), mayonnaise, fresh lemon juice, fresh dill, and a mix of spices such as garlic, onion powder, and paprika. The sauce will add a bright and zesty flavor to the burgers. For a quick and easy recipe, combine a half cup of plain Greek yogurt with two tablespoons of mayo, two tablespoons of lemon juice, a tablespoon of fresh chopped dill, one teaspoon of garlic powder, a teaspoon of onion powder, and about a quarter teaspoon of paprika. Mix that all together, and your done. If you prefer yours a bit spicy, add cayenne to taste. Drizzle this over the burger, and your good to go.
  • Hummus. A spicy hummus would pair deliciously on this burger, particularly if you're folding it into a flatbread or pita. I would suggest either a simple garlic-lemon hummus prepared with chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, tahini, salt, and pepper, or a spicy Zaatar hummus.

Delicious Sides

  • Onion Rings. These are one of my favorite recipes. Period. They cook up with a deliciously thick and crispy coating, and pair wonderfully with almost anything, including today's burgers.
  • Moroccan Tomato Salad. Crisp, light, and easy to make, a Moroccan Tomato salad would pair beautifully with today's burgers.
  • Falafel. A Mediterranean classic, falafel is a perfect side for any occasion, and even serves well as a light meal on its own.

  • Red onion - sliced thin
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 cup of flour for dredging

For the Cole Slaw:

  • 1 head of cabbage - sliced thin
  • 2 carrots - shredded

  • 4 sweet potatoes, rinsed and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon corn meal
  • 1 tablespoons mixed dried herbs including oregano, basil and parsley
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil

Instructions

Greek Style Chicken Burgers:

  1. Place the bell pepper in a heavy cast iron pan along with the garlic cloves and char the skin. Let the pepper and garlic cool. Slice the pepper and remove the seeds and set aside.
  2. Place the cubed chicken breast; a little at a time, in a food processor and process to a ground consistency.
  3. Place the spinach, sliced bell pepper, garlic, olive oil, feta cheese and salt in the food processor and give a few good chops. Add this mixture to the ground chicken and mix well.
  4. Heat a large cast iron frying pan with about 1/4 inch of Canola oil.
  5. Form the chicken into a little bigger than golf-ball size balls and dredge in the flour. Place the balls into the oil and flatten to about 1/4 - 1/2 of an inch. Do Not overcrowd the pan.
  6. When the patties are golden on one side and beginning to turn white around the edges; carefully turn them over and continue to cook on the other side. Cook about 5 - 6 minutes per side or until firm and the juices run clear.
  7. Serve on your favorite rolls, sliced tomato, sliced red onion and fresh coleslaw.

For the Cole Slaw:

  1. Place the shredded carrots, parsley and cabbage in a large bowl.
  2. Combine the salt, pepper, mayonnaise and vinegar in a small bowl and mix well. Add this dressing to the cabbage and mix. Adjust the dressing to your liking.

Herbed Sweet Potato Fries:

  1. Preheat oven 425 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl toss together sliced potatoes with cornstarch, corn meal, herbs, spices, and oil. Make sure each fry is coated. Align the fries on two large baking sheets making sure the they do not overlap and touch each other.
  3. Bake on 12 minutes, remove and flip the fries over on the other side. Place back into the oven and bake for an addition 10-12 minutes until golden.
