Written by Living the Gourmet, a trusted food and lifestyle site since 2008.

Today, we're looking at a 2024 Gamay Noir from our longtime friends over at Pindar Vineyards, located on Long Island's North Fork. The 2024 Gamay Noir is an accessibly priced social sipper; this is a wine to grab for festive yet relaxed occasions.

For aromatic and tasting notes, a brief overview of the North Fork wine region, as well as pairing suggestions, read on. Now, without further introduction, let's get tasting.

    Wine Overview

    Quick Facts

    • Winery: Today's wine comes to us from Pindar Vineyards, located on Long Island's North Fork.
    • Grape Varietals: This wine is 100% Gamay Noir.
    • ABV: 12.5% alcohol by volume.
    • Price: As of this review, a 2024 Gamay Noir costs $26.

Region - Peconic, New York, North Fork of Long Island

Pindar Vineyards was established in the early 1980s by the Damianos family, making it the oldest 'and' largest same-family-owned winery on Long Island - spanning some 500 acres. Long Island's North Fork features a maritime climate that some compare to Bordeaux.

The area is surrounded by the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Bay, which combine to create a microclimate buffered against extreme temperatures and spring frosts. This buffer is especially important to guard against Long Island's notoriously hot summers (the temperature on the North Fork is often 10-15 degrees F lower than ambient), while sea breezes keep daytime maximums significantly lower than inland New York or New Jersey. In terms of soil, Long Island's North Fork is generally well-drained gravel and sand, which is of prime importance given the Island's propensity for flooding and torrential seasonal downpours.

    Aromatic and Tasting Notes

    On the Nose

Fresh and vibrant are the words that come to mind. The wine introduces itself with a pleasant rush of mixed tart berries and red fruits - think juicy red cherries and perhaps just a hint of plum or raspberry. Deeper into the glass, the wine remains fruit-forward, but with subtly earthy undertones. Very enjoyable, and very approachable.

    On the Palate

Vibrant and tart, with the mixed berries from the aromatics carrying over deliciously. The wine is light-bodied with a firm acidity and a refreshing mouthfeel.

    Finish

The finish is crisp and clean, pleasantly complementing its refreshing mouthfeel without overstaying its welcome. A quintessential 'easy drinking' wine.

    Wine Score

I'll score this wine a respectable 92, as I believe it accomplishes precisely what it sets out to do, which is to be an accessibly priced, pleasant Long Island Gamay Noir, and an easy accompaniment for festive and light pairings.

    Food Pairings

    1. Pizza: My go-to pairing would be a simple New York-style pizza, with basic toppings like pepperoni or extra cheese.
    2. Mediterranean Cuisine: Tapas would readily complement the wine's bright profile - such as stuffed grape leaves, mixed olives, or mild cheeses. A nice moussaka would also pair decently.
    3. Charcuterie: This is a festive wine, so bring on your best charcuterie platters. Think pepper crusted salami, prosciutto, and jamon, with mixed roasted nuts, mixed olives, mild cheeses like smoked gouda, brie, or feta.
    4. Avoid: This wine is 'not' for searingly spicy food, and will be instantly overpowered by things like spicy chilies or fiery cuisines, which will in turn make the wine's acidity come off as sharp or metallic. I would also avoid heavy proteins like prime rib or hearty barbecue, as this will assuredly overpower the wine.

    Who is this Wine For?

This is a red wine aimed directly at the "Red-Lite Crowd." This is arguably Pindar's lightest red and features low tannins. As such, I feel comfortable saying that this is a perfect entry point for anyone who usually finds red wine to be too heavy or harsh. This red is also perfect for those who like their wine slightly chilled (and yes, I heard that collective gasp). This red is perfect for chilling, and that's part of what makes it a great social sipper, which also makes it great for Bistro-style dining when accompanied by things like charcuterie boards, gourmet pizzas, or fatty fish.

    Where to Buy

As of this review, you can purchase the wine directly from Pindar Vineyards.
