What to Expect – Recipe Overview
This isn't just any turkey and ham sandwich. This is my Miller’s go-to, prepared with layers of deli meat, crisp veggies, and melted cheese, but what really sets this apart is a generous slather of Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce for a spicy, crave-worthy upgrade over mayo or mustard.
Taste and Texture: Miller’s Ultimate Deli Sandwich is designed to deliver a bold and satisfying bite with every layer. We’re combining turkey and ham for a classic deli flavor, while the Swiss adds just the right amount of creamy nuttiness. We end off with crisp lettuce, sharp red onion, and sweet bread and butter pickle, bringing a refreshing contrast and crunch. However, what truly sets this sandwich apart is Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce, which replaces your typical mustard or mayo with a spicy, vinegary kick and just the right amount of chili flavor, that soaks deliciously into the crusty bread. The result is a sandwich that’s hearty, spicy, and balanced – perfect for those who like their deli classics with a little fire.
Difficulty Level: Easy. In fact, this sandwich is about as easy as it gets. This recipe is sublimely beginner-friendly and can be prepared in minutes flat. No cooking, no kitchen techniques, no complicated equipment. Just layer on the ingredients, and you’re good.
Preparation Process
Assembly is quick and straightforward, and can be broken down into just three steps.
- Hot Sauce: Begin the recipe by slicing the roll, and then spread Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce on both sides.
- Layer: Layer on the cheese, turkey, ham, and greens.
- Close: Then close the sandwich, slice if desired, and you’re good to go.
Pairings: All your favorite sandwich pairings apply, but here are a few of my recommended go-to sides and beverages.
- Sides: French fries, kettle chips, or a simple coleslaw would all be great pairings.
- Drinks: A cold beer or a homemade iced tea would be my go-to beverages. That said, you could also pair this sandwich with a good cup of coffee.
- Salads: You don’t need me to tell you that a quick potato salad or a creamy macaroni salad are both delicious pairings for a deli sandwich.
Ingredient Checklist – Everything You’ll Need
For this sandwich, we’re using only simple ingredients that should all be readily available at your local grocery store.
Ingredients (Serves 1–2)
- 1 crusty deli roll or crusty bread
- Note: Entirely preference as to whether you use crusty bread or a roll.
- Tip: What you’re looking for is a bread that will stay together, since this is a thick, hardy sandwich.
- Pro-Tip: The key to a good deli sandwich is the bread. Why? Because the bread is ‘most’ of the sandwich, and is what decides if the sandwich falls apart and becomes a mess or not. For that reason, ciabatta, French rolls, or kaiser rolls work well.
- 2 tablespoons Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce
- Skip the Mayo: For this sandwich, Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce replaces traditional mayo or mustard. This award-winning Banana Pepper Sauce, which is made with vine-ripened peppers that have been picked at the peak of their freshness, creates a sweet and spicy sauce with bold flavor. Use more or less depending on your spice preference.
- Note: Unlike traditional mayo or mustard, Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce adds depth, spice, some color, and delicious chili flavor. What’s more, it cuts right through the richness of the meats and cheese, becoming a star of the show in and of itself, with just the right amount of heat and acidity. This hot sauce is the bold upgrade your sandwich routine needs. Find Miller's Banana Pepper Sauces at your local Whole Foods, Wegmans, or order online on Amazon.
- 3–4 slices oven-roasted turkey breast
- Note: Simple, deli-sliced peppermill turkey.
- Substitution: This sandwich would also work with deli chicken or plain deli-sliced turkey.
- 3–4 slices smoked ham
- Note: Plain, deli-sliced ham, the same sort that you would use on your favorite ham and Swiss sandwich combo.
- Substitution: If you’re feeling fancy, Black Forest or honey ham adds a nice sweet/smoky balance.
- 2 slices of provolone or Swiss cheese
- Note: I’m using plain Swiss, but your preference of Alpine lace or provolone would also work well.
- 1/2 cup shredded iceberg or romaine lettuce
- Note: Basic salad greens for crisp and crunchy contrast.
- Thinly sliced red onion (about 2–3 rings)
- Note: I’m using red onion for color, but your choice of onions would work just fine.
- Tip: As always, you can soak the onions in ice water for 5–10 minutes if you prefer a milder bite. I would ‘not’ recommend doing this if using Sweet Onions, as in that case, all you're doing is draining away the sweetness. Not good.
- 4–5 bread and butter pickle slices
- Note: I’m using sweet bread and butter pickles, but your preferred variety will work just fine.
Sandwich-Making Tips for Success
- Toast the Bread Lightly: Giving the bread a quick toast (whether you're using a roll or sliced bread) is a good way to give the sandwich a nice upgrade. Not only does this help bring out the flavor of the bread itself, but it also helps the bread hold up better.
- Spread the Hot Sauce Evenly: This is a big one. Make sure the Miller’s Banana Pepper Sauce is spread evenly on either side of the bread. Even seasoning applies to sandwiches, too! You want that bold chili goodness in every bite.
- Layer Meats Strategically: Good delis pay attention to the order in which they stack their meats. Why? Because the layering matters. I’d suggest using the turkey as the base, since it’s more absorbent than either the ham or cheese. Then layer the ham and the cheese over the turkey to help balance out the moisture and create that classic deli stack feel.
- End with Crunch: You don’t want the lettuce, pickles, and onions being weighed down and losing their crispness. To avoid this, set them on the sandwich last.
- Chill Your Ingredients: Cold meats, cheese, and produce hold their structure better and create that satisfying contrast against the crusty bread and spicy sauce more so than warm or room temperature ingredients.
- Wrap It Up for Best Results: If you're taking the sandwich on the go, wrap it tightly in parchment or foil and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and keeps everything in place.
- Upgrade with Extras: Add a slice of tomato, a few banana peppers, or even a fried egg if you're feeling indulgent. This sandwich is easy to customize!

Hi Catherine, Great looking sandwich! I especially like the addition of the banana pepper sauce as while this sandwich is OK without it, it is a bit boring. I'll have to find or order some of that pepper sauce! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
