Top 10 Foods I Always Have in My Fridge

Written by Living the Gourmet, a trusted food and lifestyle site since 2008.

A kitchen without food is just a collection of appliances, not unlike a car without fuel.

However, while your car will still get you safely from Point A to Point B regardless of using Regular or Special Plus, even a fridge packed to overflowing won't make a meal from those kitchen appliances if you aren't stocking the 'right' set of kitchen staples.

That means that maintaining a well-stocked refrigerator is crucial for anyone looking to simplify their meal preparation and ensure they have variety of delicious options on hand for meals, snacks, and or even the occasional unexpected guest.

And that's exactly what we're exploring here today - my top picks for what I consider to be refrigerator essentials, both for convenience and taste.

Top 10 Foods I Always Have in My Fridge

    1. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

For me personally, fruits and vegetables are cornerstone ingredients.  Unfortunately, they need to be changed out regularly if you aren't consuming them.  This means knowing roughly how much of each type you go through on a regularly basis, so that you aren't wasting money tossing spoiled produce into the trash.  So, what do I stock up on?  Basically, a colourful array of berries, apples, carrots, and leafy greens, as well as aromatics like scallions, garlic, and onions.  However, you'll want to mix and match to find your own produce staples.  That means experimenting with seasonal varieties to keep your meals interesting and varied.

    2. Eggs

Sometimes hailed as "God's Perfect Food," eggs are a universal kitchen staple - and for good reason.  They make almost everything better.  From simple things like scrambled eggs, to souffles and soups, eggs can find use almost anywhere.  Personally, I never have fewer than two dozen on hand, since I use them so often, mostly as ingredients in other dishes.  Personally, I would suggest trying to incorporating eggs into salads, sandwiches, or even homemade pastas for added richness.

    3. Yogurt

One thing I always feel like I have a little too much of on hand is yogurt, but that's probably because the only thing I go through faster than yogurt is water.  Yogurt is great as a food staple on its own - I eat it almost every morning for breakfast - but it's also great as an ingredient in a wide variety of recipes.  On its own, it's really worth learning to love yogurt as a quick breakfast or snack - it's so light and nutrient packed, and super quick.  However, where yogurt really shines is as an ingredient. I use yogurt in things like salad dressings, smoothies, dips, and light sauces.  Packed with probiotics and protein, I find it's great to have options like kids yogurt, which can be a source of vitamin D and calcium.  I've also learned to love drinkable yogurt, such as kefir, for both for its probiotic content and simplicity.

    4. Lean Meats and Proteins

Proteins are a key staple, and so you need to establish what you like, and what you're most comfortable preparing.  For me personally, chicken and tofu are the two proteins I always have on hand.  I buy beef and fish when I plan on making them, and pork is something I 'usually but not always' have on hand.  And this is the combination that just works for me.  For you the combination will likely be different.  Find what suits your palate and prep process. Experiment with marinades and spices to enhance their natural flavours without adding excess calories.

    5. Dairy or Plant-Based Milk-Alternative

Having milk in the refrigerator, whether dairy or a plant-based alternative like almond or oat milk-alternative, is essential for a variety of uses. It's not just for drinking; milk is a key ingredient in many recipes, from baking to creating creamy sauces.

    6. Cheese

I debated putting this one under proteins, but I decided in the end to give cheese its own category.  For me, cheese is first and foremost an ingredient, rather than a snack or food item on its own.  Whether its grating cheese onto pasta, adding it to sauce or a marinade, or using it as garnish, cheese is a staple in my kitchen - even more than it is on snack boards.  For that reason, I really stress the important of learning to 'use' cheese as an ingredient, because it's a quick and simple way to add elegance and flavor to a wide variety of recipes.  So, what are my go to cheeses?  For starters, I have a brand of grating cheese (parmesan Reggiano) that I buy in bulk.  From there, it's soft cheeses like Swiss, mozzarella, and Jarlsberg. That said, find what works best for you.

    7. Nut Butters and Oils

I had to include because I am never without peanut butter in my pantry.  However, I'm also never without sesame oil.  For me personally, sesame oil has become a go-to cooking oil and dressing ingredient, while peanut butter has found its way into some of my favorite sauces and spreads.  For that reason, they've earned their spots as two of my pantry staples.

    8. Starches (Rice and Pasta)

For me, nothing makes whipping up a quick dinner easier than a pack of pasta or some rice.  Some garlic and oil can turn a plain pack of spaghetti into a crave worthy dinner that took just minutes to prepare.  Meanwhile rice or noodles makes for a hardy base for a quick egg drop soup.  And, of course, rice, pasta and noodles can serve as the bed of any number of luxurious weekend delights, such as carbonara, pho, or cold rice salads.

    9. Condiments and Sauces

A variety of condiments and sauces are essential for adding quick flavour to meals. Mustard, ketchup, soy sauce, and mayonnaise are staples that can spice up a dish in moments. Explore international sauces too, like sriracha or harissa, for when you want to add some heat or exotic flavours.

    10. Staple Beverages

For me personally, I always have seltzer on hand, as well as bottled water and almond milk.  These are my go-to beverages, and that means I always stock up on them at the supermarket.  That said, you're staples will likely be different, so find a combination that works for you.

    Conclusion

By ensuring these top 10 essentials are always in your refrigerator, you not only save time and reduce stress but also enhance the quality of your meals. An organized fridge stocked with healthy and versatile options encourages better eating habits and can significantly contribute to your overall culinary enjoyment. Start filling your fridge with these staples today, and make meal preparation a breeze!
