As any reader to this blog will agree, food is one of the most important aspects of life. Yet during the workday, our busy schedules make it difficult to really put the effort in when it comes to our meals. Take breakfast, for example. If you’re in a hurry to leave the house, of course you might just grab a rushed slice of toast instead of cooking up some delicious eggs benedict and this is understandable.
But lunch is a different story. So many people settle for a sad cheese sandwich or a soggy salad they threw together the night before. But this is unacceptable. The prospect of lunch is what gets you through the morning, and gives you energy to get through the rest of the day. You spend a third of your adult life at work, so you shouldn’t settle for a mediocre lunch every single time.
To help you jazz up your midday meal and inject some colour into your weekdays, here are four great ways to elevate your work lunch.
Get the right storage
The storage containers you own will dictate what you can bring for lunch. Regular tupperware containers are great for sandwiches and salads, but if you have a bit of variety you can bring a real banquet to the office. Small pots are perfect for dips like hummus and guacamole, while you can also get special containers for soups and stews. Investing in a few different types of storage will increase your options and make your lunches more exciting.
Plan ahead
Many people’s work lunches are just a hastily thrown together sandwich, which is usually a result of lack of planning. But if you think ahead when doing your grocery shopping, you can create some much more enjoyable lunch ideas. Even just making a little extra when cooking your evening meal will allow you to enjoy some delicious leftovers at your desk in the morning. With some forethought on a Sunday, you can do some batch cooking for the week ahead and ensure every lunch is something to look forward to.
Spice it up
Keeping a jar of seasoning or a bottle of hot sauce in your desk drawer allows you to liven up any meal you eat in the office. Even if it’s just a boring supermarket salad, you can spice it up and make it much more exciting. Just make sure to keep it on the down low, otherwise you coworkers will all be asking to borrow it!
Don’t forget the coffee break
A steaming mug of tea or coffee is one of the greatest simple pleasures in life, so you shouldn’t settle for less when it comes to your office hot drinks. Most workplaces provide coffee, but this can be hit and miss. Sometimes you’ll get a delicious out of home coffee machine with real beans, but other employers may just provide a sad jar of instant coffee. If your company’s offering is lacking, why not prepare your tea or coffee at home and bring it to work in a Thermos? Or even invest in an Aeropress so you can make it at your desk?
