Today, we're looking at a 2024 Pinot Grigio from our longtime friends over at Pindar Vineyards located on Long Island's North Fork. The 2024 Pinot Grigio is an approachably priced bottle, ideal for relaxed gatherings and warm-weather fare.

Read on for aromatic and tasting notes, a brief overview of the North Fork wine region, and pairing suggestions. Now, without further introduction, let's get tasting.

Wine Overview

Quick Facts

  • Winery: The 2024 Pinot Grigio was produced on the North Fork of Long Island by Pindar Vineyards.
  • Grape Varietals: This wine is 100% Pinot Grigio.
  • ABV: 13% alcohol by volume.
  • Price: As of this review, you can find the 2024 Pinot Grigio for $26.

Region - Peconic, New York, North Fork of Long Island

Pindar Vineyards was established in 1979 by Dr. Herodotus 'Dan' Damianos, with the first vintage appearing in 1982. Today, Pindar Vineyards spans some 500 acres across Long Island's North Fork.

Long Island's North Fork is surrounded by the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Bay, which combine to create a microclimate buffered against extreme temperatures and spring frosts. This buffer is especially important to guard against Long Island's notoriously hot summers (the temperature on the North Fork is often 10-15 degrees F lower than ambient), while sea breezes keep daytime maximums significantly lower than inland New York or New Jersey. In terms of soil, Long Island's North Fork is generally well-drained gravel and sand, which is of prime importance given the Island's propensity for flooding and torrential seasonal downpours.

Aromatic and Tasting Notes

On the Nose

The wine introduces itself with bright and crisp notes of green apple and white grapefruit. Citrus zest manifests on second whiff, especially deeper into the glass, where the aromatics mature with hints of juicy pear and honeydew.

On the Palate

The wine is light-bodied, with a clean and refreshing mouthfeel. The citrus from the bouquet carries over very nicely onto the palate, with the addition of tropic fruit. The flavors are balanced by a soft acidity and just a hint of minerality. Very pleasant.

Finish

Ultra-clean is the phrase that comes to mind for the finish, and zesty. A perfect ending to each sip, in my opinion.

Wine Score

I'll score this wine a very respectable 91. This is a quality North Fork Pinot Grigio offered at a very approachable price. If you're looking for a refreshing, crisp white wine that's great for casual gatherings, especially warm weather gatherings, this wine is for you.

Food Pairings

  1. Fish: Opt for fresh, white-bodied fish - especially lighter prepared fish. Think fresh fish with a butter and herbs sauce, or a light seafood sauce tossed with pasta. Shellfish would also work well. Fried flounder would be my go-to pairing, especially for the warmer weather.
  2. Poultry: White wine and chicken is a bit of a cliché, but it's a cliché for a reason - it works, and this Pinot Grigio is no different. For this particular wine, I would opt for lighter chicken dishes, especially grilled chicken topped over a lush green salad.
  3. Charcuterie: This is a light, easy-drinking wine, so it would be a delightful pairing with charcuterie platters. Mild, creamy cheeses, paired with mixed nuts, olives, and perhaps prosciutto or salami. The cheeses I would opt for are fresh mozzarella, brie, or feta.

Who is this Wine For?

This wine is targeted to casual white wine enthusiasts looking for quality wine available at an approachable price. The 2024 Pinot Grigio is marketed as "summer in a glass," and this is - in my opinion - precisely what the wine delivers. This wine is also great for outdoor and social drinkers, and I can easily imagine this wine being enjoyed on a patio or at the beach, since its approachable price makes it great for casual social gatherings, especially warm-weather activities.

Where to Buy
