Why You'll Love Asian Style Hot Dogs

Taste and Texture:

These Asian Style Hot Dogs deliver sweet, savory, and spicy layers of flavor in every bite. It's a delicious blend of East meets West that I guarantee you will be making again and again. It also has a nice crunch to it from the crisp cucumbers, toasted sesame, and toasted bread. This is my new summer favorite.

Difficulty Level:

This is a very simple-to-prepare dish with your choice of 'gourmet' toppings. It's versatile too, so whether you love it spicy or mild, you can customize it to your delight.

Preparation Process:

The only 'prep' you'll have to do is some chopping, unless you're making the teriyaki sauce (which we highly recommend you do); even still, the preparation is not elaborate. Simply throw the hot dogs on the grill, glaze, and assemble with your favorite toppings.

Asian Style Hot Dogs Ingredient Checklist

While these hot dogs may look upscale, they're deceptively easy to prepare. The flair comes down to toppings- get creative with your favorite flavors. Some suggestions are included below:

  • Hot Dogs - Use quality hot dogs; it will make a huge difference in the result. I look for pasture-raised beef that I know comes from a sustainable source. What are the best hot dog brands out there?
  • Buns or Bread - If you're like me and forgot hot dog buns at the store, sliced bread works too. A quick trick I learned is to gently roll the slice out and place it in a taco holder. Once the bread is lightly toasted, it will hold its shape.
  • Teriyaki Sauce - Last week, we shared our simple recipe for Homemade Teriyaki Sauce. It's perfect as a marinade, sauce, or condiment. I brushed the hot dogs with Teriyaki while they were grilling, giving them a sticky, flavorful finish.
  • Pickled Onions - I love the sweet, briny onion in today's dish. You can use a variety of your favorite pickled or fermented ingredients, such as jalapenos, daikon radish, carrots, or kimchi.
  • Sliced Cucumbers - Thinly sliced cucumbers are so refreshing and perfectly balance the spice and saltiness.
  • Green Onions - Scallions are mild, so they won't make the hot dogs overwhemlingly 'oniony'. Plus, they add a nice pop of color.
  • Pickled Ginger - I love pickled ginger- slightly sweet and a little spicy, it just plays beautifully into the flavor profile.
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds - Their nutty flavor also adds a bit of crunch to the hot dogs.
  • Chili Sauce: A sweet and spicy chili sauce would pair deliciously, with the spicy notes contrasting deliciously with the fresh ingredients, while the sweetness would heighten the meatiness of the hot dogs.
  • Spicy Mayo - The best topping for these umami hot dogs is spicy Japanese mayo. You can also make your own with a base of mayonnaise, sesame oil, and chili paste or sriracha. Check our 'notes' in the recipe card for the recipe.

Asian Style Hot Dogs Pairings

  • Cold Noodle Salad - Have you seen cold noodle salad trending on TikTok recently? It's such a perfect summertime dish- refreshing and satisfying. It would also pair excellently with today's hot dogs for a cookout.
  • Asian-Style Slaw - Our Asian Summer Slaw would even be good served on top of the hot dog buns. It's sweet, spicy, and delicious. Plus, it's made without mayo!
  • Green Tea Slushie - Boasting of just three ingredients (not including garnishes), our slushie is the perfect warm-weather refreshment you can make all season long.

Asian Style Hot Dogs FAQs

Can I use store-bought teriyaki sauce?

Yes, but our Homemade Teriyaki brings the most flavor and richness. Plus, homemade is always better- no additional preservatives or unnecessary ingredients.

Are these hot dogs spicy?

Yes, but it also depends on the person's spice tolerance. I would label them mildly spicy. You can adjust the spice level if you're sensitive to spice by omitting the pickled ginger and swapping the spicy mayo for something mild or just drizzling with additional Teriyaki.

Can I make this recipe gluten-free?

Yes, make sure the hot dogs you are using are certified gluten-free. Also, use gluten-free buns or bread. Most importantly, use tamari instead of soy sauce in the teriyaki sauce, as some may not realize that traditional soy sauce is not gluten-free.

Can I make these vegetarian?

Yes, simply swap the hot dogs for your preferred brand of plant-based hot dogs or try grilled tofu.
