There are very few things in life that one cannot ever have too much of, and sadly most of them are metaphoric in nature. For example one can never have too much “laughter,” “love,” or “sunrises.” While that’s certainly all well and good, what about the material things we can never have too much of? Oddly, I found myself thinking about this other day, and after I realized that even too much oxygen will turn fatally toxic, I had all but despaired.
I was in the midst of this existential crisis when my older brother called and invited himself, along with a few friends, for a game day party. Cue the epiphany.
Yes, game day parties are one of those rare items that one can never truly over indulge in, since for the true sports enthusiast rallying with like-minded fans over trays of appropriately ‘gamey’ food is akin to feasting in Valhalla.
And there’s a simple reason for this. Like the ‘feasts’ of old, the act of sport is a social expression of organized comradery and competition, equal parts entertainment, athleticism, and social construct. As a result, it’s only natural that the best way to watch and enjoy a sport is, well, socially.
Speaking of feasts, as anyone who frequents Living the Gourmet knows, when my friends and family get together to enjoy a game, the feast is almost exclusively mine to provide. You also probably know that I always like to keep things new and fresh, challenging myself to try to constantly put a new spin our game meals, a sort of ‘game behind the game’ that I play against myself. This time, however, things were going to be a little simpler than usual, since it would be a smaller gathering than most.
Which brings us to today’s recipe. While I of course wanted to keep things interesting, I wanted a meal that would match the mood of the night - easy, relaxed, and thoroughly enjoyable.
It was with that in mind that I set off to Walmart to pick up the supplies for the party. Yet, I was still largely planning the menu while I roamed the aisles.
You see, while I had an idea, most of the particulars were still up in the air, that is, until I came across Boneless BBQ Chicken Bites, Buffalo Chicken Bites, and Mozzarella Bites from Farm Rich. It’s a brand I’ve come to rely on for snacks and appetizers for just these kinds of gatherings. Since they are made from real ingredients and are Real-Life Good™, they help me free up time no matter what life is throwing at me. However, I wasn’t ‘simply’ serving Buffalo Chicken Bites or BBQ Bites. Instead, I prepared a BBQ and Buffalo Chicken Parmesan Bites, as shown below, then paired them with the Mozarella Bites and a marinara dipping sauce. The end result was absolutely quintessential game food - hardy, finger friendly, and delicious. And, just like that, I was able to combine a number of familiar and welcome flavors with a much welcomed twist.
