Living the Gourmet is pleased to present the wines of Halter Ranch.
In 2000, Swiss entrepreneur and businessman Hansjorg Wyss purchased 900 acres of the historic Edwin Smith holding in Paso Robles, California in order to pursue his passion for world class wine. Mr. Wyss has since renovated Smith’s 19th century farmhouse, enlarged the vineyards, and outfitted the winery with state of the art facilities.

The estate vineyard, initiated in 1996, currently includes 280 acres of the 1000-acre Halter Ranch. Boasting soil rich in limestone, elevations reaching 1750 feet, and cooling Pacific breezes that ensure slow and even ripening in the otherwise warm climate, the property is ideal for wine production.
While Halter Ranch has placed an emphasis on ensuring they produce a top-quality product, they have complemented this with a passion for sustainability. In 2008, Halter Ranch received SIP Certification, Sustainability in Practice, recognizing their commitment to sustainable farming.
Living the Gourmet was given the opportunity to sample two of Halter Ranch’s wines, the Cotes de Paso, and the Cotes de Paso Blanc.
The Cotes de Paso is a bright and focused wine, with a smooth finish, perfect for grilled meats or hard cheese.
This wine is a combination of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Tannat, creating a seamless blend of fruit and acidity. Combining Grenache from dry-farmed, head-trained vines with hillside grown Syrah, results in a wine that has bright fruit and lighter tannins, while the Mourvedre adds red fruit and spice. The Tannat adds color, acidity, and tannin.
The Cotes de Paso Blanc is rich flavors of melon and ripe peach, which lead into a clean, mineral finish. This wine is a classic Southern Rhone Valley white blend, offering a complex bouquet of lemon blossom, jasmine, and pineapple. While delicious to sip on its own, this wine makes a perfect complement to seafood, or soft cheeses.
