Living the Gourmet is pleased to present Limoneira, one of North America’s oldest and largest producers of lemons. The lemons I received arrived in a decorative crate, neatly packed to guard against bruising. The lemons themselves were fresh, pure bright yellow, and possessed a powerful, ‘pucker-inducing’ flavor, which was perfect for our lemon bars, lemonade, and LTG-signature marinades.
Limoneira also produces avocados, oranges, and a range of specialty fruits, including blood oranges, pummelos, cara cara, and super red grapefruit, among others.
Aside from their devotion to quality, Limoneira continually presses innovation. From the development of the Limco 8A in the 1940s, a lemon variety that proved both resistant to disease and maintained a longer shelf life, to current partnering with the University of California’s Agriculture and Natural Resources program, Limoneira remains on the cutting edge of the agribusiness.
An important part of Limoneira’s press for innovation is their drive for sustainability. In 2004, Limoneira partnered with Agromin to create an organic recycling program, through which Limoneira receives green materials, which are then turned into mulch for use on Limoneira land, curbing erosion and improving water efficiency. Continuing their push for sustainability in their operations, in 2008 Limoneira completed work on two state-of-the-art solar projects, which has since saved an estimated 64,000 tons of greenhouse gases.
All in all, Living the Gourmet can easily recommend Limoneira not just for the products they provide, but as a company devoted to ethical and sustainable business practices.
