Living the Gourmet is pleased to present the 5:2 Diet and The 5:2 Diet Cookbook from author Kate Harrison.  Kate Harrison is the author of Old School Ties, The Secret Shopper's Revenge, and the Soul Beach series.

The 5:2 Diet distinguishes itself from among the ever-burgeoning pack of diets and fads by being less of an eating regime, less of a total diet restructuring, and instead focuses on being a simple formula to change 'how' one eats.  While the 5:2 Diet makes suggestions on meal plans, nutrition, and recipes, the core of the diet is structured around the principle of basic weekly planning - five days of normal eating, and two non-consecutive days of fasting.

The book outlines the dramatic change that will occur in how the reader/dieter views hunger and food, the cost savings that this can result in, methods to personalizing the diet to one's own life and needs, and detailed meal-planning alongside healthy recipes.  The book also features a plethora of life-tips, success stories from women as well as men who have tried the diet, and even suggestions on ready-made food for when cooking a fresh meal isn't practical.  The key to this diet's success is its very simple approach to weight loss; there are no caloric formulas, and no food-branch restrictions.  Instead, the diet stresses basic nutrition alongside the 5-2 weekly planning, making for a concise, easy to follow program.

With the 5:2 Diet book, Living the Gourmet also received the 5:2 Diet Cookbook.  The cookbook features 120 recipes specifically formulated for the two non-consecutive days of fasting.  These recipes include a range of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items.  The meal items, aside from being meal suggestions for the days of fasting, also work as 'trainers,' teaching the reader how to prepare meals when fasting, and how to structure these meals in such a way that minimizes 'feeling' like one is fasting.

That being said, while Living the Gourmet cannot definitively endorse any diet or health program, we feel comfortable saying that the 5:2 Diet plan is worthy of consideration, based upon the material presented to us.

Adapted from:  The 5:2 Diet Cookbook
2 cups flour
Pinch of salt
½ tsp. baking soda
 5 tbs. butter
½ cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. almond extract
2 oz. chocolate bar - crumbled
Powdered sugar - for dusting, if desired
Preheat Oven 375 degrees:
Sift flour, salt and baking soda into a bowl.  Add the butter, cut into small pieces, and rub in using your fingertips.
Add the sugar, egg, almond extract, crumbled chocolate and mix to form fairly firm dough.
Turn on to a lightly floured surface and roll into a cylinder about, 9 inches long.  Cut the dough into rounds and arrange them on a prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
Bake cookies for 10 - 12 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges.  Leave on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool.
Enjoy with Love,
Catherine

I've heard lots of comments about the 5:2 diet or lifestyle. Not sure it's for me but worthy of reflection. 🙂

Catherine, I am ready for a couple of these cookies! I'm finishing my second cup of coffee for the day and it would go very well with a nice cookie... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
