Aside from guarding against inebriation and other 'immoralities,' these restrictions also served to guard against certain foods that, on a practical level, were the most likely to cause disease. This helps to explain why most foods considered 'impure' by religious custom, were also the most likely to cause physical harm. It is, therefore, no wonder that these customs have begun to fall to the wayside with the dawn of modern safeguards - their practical value has vanished. Aside from 'grace,' prayers of actual 'thanksgiving' for food were traditionally said afterthe meal, a typical modern misconception of the purpose of 'grace.'
All that being said, Bless This Food, is a fine compilation of various prayers for before and after meals from a variety of religions. So, whether you are in fact looking for a prayer to say before or after your meal, or are simply interested, for historical and contextual reasons, in reading through a variety of meal prayers from around the world, Bless This Food is worth a look.
Enjoy with Love,
