Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter bottoms of 2 (8×8 inch) pans or one loaf pan.
In a large bowl, mix sugar and butter. Add eggs, bananas, buttermilk and vanilla: beat with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Stir in flour, baking soda and nuts just until moistened. Pour batter into pan.
Bake for 1 hour or until toothpick test inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool before icing.
For Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting:
Beat cream cheese, butter, sour cream and vanilla in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
Gradually beat in 1 box confectioners’ sugar on medium speed until smooth.
