Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- 8 tbs. butter
- 11/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. fresh ground black pepper
- 8 tsp. baking powder
- 2 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven 375 degrees F.
- Place flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and butter in a large bowl.
- Add the butter by the spoonful. Use a pastry cutter or fork to crumble shortening to a course consistency.
- Stir the buttermilk into the mixture and gently work into a soft ball of dough.
- Sprinkle a clean surface with flour.
- Place the dough on the floured surface and gently knead four or five times.
- Put a little flour on a rolling pin and gently roll the dough until it is approximately 1/2 inch thick.
- Use a one-cup measuring cup to cut out the biscuits.
- Butter a heavy large cast iron pan and place the biscuits in the pan.
- Bake 10 – 12 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Serve warm with butter and jam.
